Who travels on Salaria road, towards the Sabina and the Appennino mountains, from the Agro Romano, specially in the limpid days notices the massif hilly of the Terminillo. Nearly all the studious have found of agreement in identifying the four current summits (Terminillo, Terminilletto, Terminilluccio and Monte Elefante) with the ancient mount Tetrico " TETRICAE HORRENTES RUPES " of Virgilio and " GURGURES HIGH MONTES " of Varrone. To the beginning of the 1700's the writer reatino Lorenzo Mattei, illustrating the city of Rieti in its Reatino " Erario Reatino " supplies one precise indication approximately the dialectal name Monte Urulu used from the Reatini in order to identify the current Terminillo mount, in order of one obvious deformation of the Varroniano "Gurgures".
Before the 1700's the topographical papers of the Sabina indicated Terminillo with highest dolomitic peaks, obvious sign of the fear, the horror and the impression that in the past the mountains provoked in the psycology of the man. The geographic papers of the Papal State even indicated the mount with toponym "Monte Gurgure". To the beginning of the 1800's it was only asserted with new toponym of Terminillo, used since the 1500's between the population. Afterwards in 1808 in the paper of the Geographic Atlas of the Reign of the Two Sicilie, of Antonio Rizzi figured the Terminillo name. The problems of the borders between the State of the Church and the Reign of Naples, carried to the affirmation the current name of the mountain. In mounts reatini, the forests had one richest amount of game of every kind. The piedemontans men were accustomed to hunt bears, chamois and wild boars, like documented from a bass-relief of the parochial house of Sigillo. The life of the mountain, until the annexation to the Reign of Italy was constituted from woodmen, shepherds and peasants, which more had a great familiarity with the elevated mountain and knew better the paths. Towards the end of the 1800's it began to outline the destiny of the mountain and for merit of the Italian Alpine Club the shelter Umberto I° was constructed in the summer of "1908".
With the shelter began an archaic tourism and the first tourists, expectant to try the emotion of the mountaineering, passed the night in the shelter only in order to see in the morning one of the more charming and evocative panoramas that only the summits of the Appennino can offer. They concur with the human eye to space from the vision of the two seas (Mediterranian and Adriatic), to the prairies, the glades between the beech-woods and the deep and dark walloons in an atmosphere sour and wild, but full of fascination. An other shelter, the Trebbiani in 1930 carried in the Terminillo new comitive of tourists. December 23 of 1933 was inaugurated the first part of The Lisciano-Pian De' Roche road, and in the first months of the following year the second, Pian De' Valli-Forogna Field road.
The town-plan order was upgraded with other structures: hotel, stores, schools, schools of ski, ski-lift, telpherage. A tourism of quality and of člite was developed, because the Station was attended from illustrious personages, of the culture, politics, the medicine, the sport and the cinema, which they contributed to introduce Terminillo beyond the borders and in the world, since from the point of view of the practicability was and is the easyest to reach Tourist Station. The tourist potentialities of the Terminillo are multiple and thanks to the riches that possess, can give the possibility of moments of physical, mental and spitirual rest. The silent, the fascination of the summits, the candor of snows and blooming of unforgettable friendships between the people who live, operate and produce in the village and those that the sport, the nature, the mountaineering, the horse riding love or more simply love the mountain, for the peace and the quiet ones that it succeeds to instill, in every mind.
